Three Fifths

This blog’s name comes from the Constitutional Convention of the United States of America in 1787.It's known as the 3/5th rule. This rule permitted the counting of slaves, with the equation 1 slave = 3/5 of a white man,for the allocation of Congressional Seats.I make this statement not out of anger but to give some perspective as to how African Americans have been perceived in this country from the beginning. It's time to look at the world from our point of view. *Peace* Ashari

Why We Don't Health Insurance Reform

We do not need health insurance reform in the United States. What we need is to reform health care. I beleive there is a huge difference between health insurance and health care. I my opion health care has the patients interests as the primary concern.Where as health insurance the primary interest is profit margin and the patient concerns are somewhere down the list of things.I understand that President Obama is walking a tight rope on this issue. But I would say that it is time to drop the bipartisan approach and move ahead with a public option. The democracts and the president were elected because the people wanted a change that is badly needed in this country. They should move ahead with reconciliation on this issue.
We hear that the insurance companies are onboard with health insurance reform. They should be onboard for this.If we have health insurance reform as it is being framed at this time.Insurance companpies would garner a large windfall profit. Many of the plans call for each citizen to have manditory coverage. This would increase the customer base of the large companies. This would be the same as with auto insurance. We were told that if everyone was covered our rates would decrease. The opposite has happened in the state that I live in.
When we see Harry and Louise, who became famous in a commercial that had a part in killing the Clinton attempt at health care reform, in a commercial today supporting reform. We should wonder why an insurance organization would support and pay for that commercial. The bottom line is president Obama and the progressive democrats need to play hardball with the Blue Dogs and forget about bipartisan support for this issue. It is much too important.

I have been watching the Press, television commentators and pundants giving senator Obama a pass on their coverage of his campaign. That is to say they have nothing critical to say about his campaign or taken a critical look at his policies or record.Instead they have taken statements of the Clintons and anyone who supports senator Clinton out of context and called this race baiting or using the race card.It seems as if they think the African American community is so naive or uninformed that this will work. I understand we now have a twenty-four hour News cycle and the airtime needs to be filled with something, even if it is a misrepresentation of what was said and then trumpeted for weeks. I have been shocked at the number of African Americans, including the so called articulate, politically savvy and college educated, that have used this to attack the Clinton's.It is as if those that fell for this forgot how to read a paragraph and understand what the speaker is conveying in it.When President Bill Clinton ended the paragraph in a statement about Senator Obama's claim of superior judgment on the vote for authorization to use military force in Iraq.He ended with the line "This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've every seen".The Media took this one line turned it around to meaning that Obama's campaign was a fair tale. The only thing reported was the last line, which was out of the context of the speech and broadcast to the world. The second offense of the Media came in South Carolina. The simple phase "Jesse Jackson won South Carolina in '84 and '88.Jackson ran a good campaign. And Obama ran a good campaign".This was translated by the Press as Obama is the"Black Candidate".The Clintons are playing the race card is the way this simple statment was and still is played by the Press. And again many intelligent people black and white bought into this nonsense.Politics is and always will be a rough game.It is about power. These statements were taken out of context, but imagine they were not. This is small stuff compared to what has happen in the past and probably will happen in the general election with the Republicans. We need a Press Corp that will not exploit and intertpret statments to their own liking and for their own gain. There is too much at stake. We also need an electorate that is knowledgeable enough not to fall for this kind of ploy.Don't get me wrong I am a proud African American and would love to see an African American as president of this country, but these are perilous times.Senator Obama is an intelligent and charismatic man.Hope is something we all need. The problem is hope does not move legislation. Knowing how to move the levers of government is what moves legislation.I will support Senator Hillary Clinton.I hope the Democaratic Party does not just do what will make many feel good about the supposed progress the party will have appeared to have made.By making Senator Obama our presidental nomonee and feeling good about ourseleves, but on substance. We need to remember who our advisaries are and support whom ever the democratic candidate is.
